MERE DAD KI MARUTI [Movie Review] (3/5)

MERE DAD KI MARUTI' is a fun ride!

Keeping things simple, it treads a focused path, which is consistently riveting and at times toppingly hilarious, despite its flaws. With superb performances and adept direction, this one is pure Punjabi fun.

The story of a boy (Saqib Saleem), from a loud Punjabi Family in Chandigarh, who sneaks his dad’s fancy new car out to impress the college hottie (Rhea Chakraborty). All hell breaks loose when Sameer manages to lose the car.

“Y Films”, Yashraj’s alternate production house basically for the gen-next has come up with some really interesting cinema in the past. It does it with “Mere Dad Ki Maruti” yet again. The film is never pretentious and just stays true to its nature. The scenes are mostly real, except for a few over the top sequences. But you can forgive such misplays as long as you’re having a good time watching. And it does succeed in keeping your eyeballs glued for these two hours. It moves at a brisk pace, and never gives you even a chance to get bored or tired. Debutant director Ashima Chibber is terrific and makes sure you are provided with genuine entertainment all the time. Watch the part where, the bride to be dedicates a dance performance to her fiancĂ© in the sangeet function. You just can’t help but laugh out boisterously throughout.

The whole plot is pretty fresh, if not innovative, and the freshness is further enhanced by the fact that it stars young talented actors. The writing is far from perfect, and even a novice can make out the flaws. Then again, the narrative never really required perfection and somehow the fluent comedy overshadows all of these. There are certain dialogues and scenes, especially the ones involving the family members and guests in the wedding, which are clichéd and sometimes even overplayed. But other than that the screenplay is smooth and dialogues, hep. The Punjabi tone is naturally blended in each aspect, which makes it so much more amusing.

Actors are the real cause of merriment here. Each one is fantastic. Saqib Saleem is the highlight. He’s proven his prowess in his debut film Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, and here he’s superb yet again. Ram Kapoor is his usual perfect self, fitting into yet another character seamlessly. Rhea Chakraborty is relatively poor with her acting skills, although her attitude is mostly apt. All other actors are great.

In all, MERE DAD KI MARUTI is young, refreshing and funny. Go for it, a good time is guaranteed!
